Hindsight is a wonderful gift because it gives you the opportunity to gather your experience and turn it into wisdom and potential insight for yourself and others.
It was at 22 that I really started to get into the sales profession from a B2B perspective. I was given a lot of different advice along the way. Some good, some great, some bad and some I don't want to remember.
Naturally as you grow, you take on new responsibilities, manage larger and more complex accounts but some of the things you learned then won't always be helpful later. I had banged my head against a few walls wondering why the same sales approaches I used at one stage of my career didn't work as well later on when managing a larger account, or why working on skill alone wasn't sufficient and character development was just as important particularly when moving into places of managing a team or dealing with C-level executives.
These might have seemed obvious to most but it wasn't to me and still isn't to many account managers around the world. To those account managers 1-3 years in or even to the old hats in sales for 10 + years this is still for you.
Here are four things you may never have been told but may need to consider today
- Learn to love your customers. Your ability to really serve at a high level will be determined by how much you choose to care about other people.
- Get around people who will challenge where you are and see who you could become.
- A sales process is simply meant to help you understand what decisions and actions need to be made by you and your customer so you can discover the best solution together. It is not to restrict you to one way of selling.
- Skills will get you through door but character (who you are) will keep you in the room. Be someone worth keeping in the room.
What things have you learned in your career so far that you would share with your younger self?
